Pedro S. Dandan

To win a prize in the annual Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature is a big, glossy feather in a writer’s cap. Aside from attaining the glory of recognition for his opus, he reaps solid cash. Pedro S. Dandan of Baliwag had just done that. He had romped off with two first prizes, two second prizes and a third prize for his short stories, a third prize for a play and two honorable mentions for poetry, all in Filipino.

Dandan’s winning streak in the prestigious literary competition started in 1951, when he was barely 35 and lasted until 1974. As early as 1947, however he had already won the coveted Best Short Story award given by the Surian ng Wikang Pambansa. No less than the former First Lady, Doña Aurora Quezon handed him the P200 prize which was handsome amount in those days.
His Palanca winning works are as follows: Mabangis na Kamay, Maamong Kamay (short story, 2nd prize 1951); Sugat ng Digma (short story, 1st prize 1957); Lakas (short story, 3rd prize 1958); Anino ng Kanyang Ama (short story, 2nd prize 1966); Ang Daong ni Noe (short story, 1st prize 1973); and Tinig: Sa Bagong Panahon (poetry, honorable mention 1974).

“Pedro S. Dandan is a master of the short story.” acclaims writer-professor Buenaventura S. Medina Jr., who translated Dandan’s Inahing Aso at Limang Tuta into English and inculded it in his anthology, The Philippine Literature, a college textbook. But Dandan wasn’t only a kwentista but a nobelista also, a distinction that made him an all-around pen publisher. His novel, Si Ringo ata ng Bulag na Anghel split the first prize of P5 000 with two other winners in the Malacañang Balagtas Memorial Award in 1969 while the other one by Teodoro Agoncillo merited a special recognition. Agoncillo selected Dandan’s May Buhay sa Looban for his anthology of Filipino short stories. So did Professor Matute for her 12 Katha.

All told, Pedro Dandan who was born on June 30, 1916 had published no less than 350 stories, essays, poems and novels, 21 of which have gained honors and due recognitions. What is remarkable about his achievements is that he produced his literary work only during his off-days from his government job. He was with the Philippine National Railways where he started as a billing clerk in 1940.

Dandan is survived by his wife, the former Emeteria de Guzman and nine children. The Dandan Family leaves in Concepcion Subdivision.

We do not claim ownership to this article. Our main aim is to let people in Baliwag specially the younger generation know the people of the town and their history. We admire Mr. Villacorte's book but what will be the essense of his book and the great history he have compiled if only a few people and those than can afford to buy it can read it. Before Baliwag.net there is no source of info about Baliwag... this is the reason why we have launched this website.

The "written" only means I am the one that encoded this article. We do not mean any harm on this but pure freedom of information.
