Another interesting local custom still prevailing though not quite like before a few decades ago, is the so-called pagbabansag- the giving appellation to townmates for easy identification. Most often these sobriquets are funny and they stick with the rebaptized persons all their lives even through succeeding generations.
Such indiscrimante creation of nicknames is not uncommon in Baliwag, particularly in the barrios. The local folk have a remarkable penchant for rebaptizing each other at the slightest provocation.
Example of such names are Pentong Pan de Carne, Joseng Bombo, Ferirong Magmamani, Pilong Bakla, Nanong Keruwe and Ipeng Cobrador.
Most of these have become almost impossible to identify without their rustic nicknames. It is obvious that this “bansags” are associated with some incidents in the lives of those “renamed” or with their physical defects or simply with their occupation.
