Panuluyan
One of the quaint customs and tradtions that the town of Baliwag has observed through the years is the panuluyan. This custom which reflects the townspeople’s deep religious spirit, reenacts every Christmas Eve the ordeal suffered by Mary and Joseph in their vain search for shelter where she could give birth to her first son Jesus. The panuluyan starts our from the church at about 8:00 in the evening. Accompanied by a procession of devotees and by brilliantly lighted carosa on which the life-size figures of Joseph and Mary are mounted.
Traditionally, there were only nine designated panuluyan homes in the
different parts of the town, and the late Guillermo Espiritu better
known as Tandang Imong singlehandely acted as the unkind homeowners for
several decades. Nobody knows who composed the panuluyan words and
music. It is generally believed that the late Modesto Enrile, one of
the town’s most prominent maestros was the composer thereof.
